Planes, Trains, and Familymobiles
This weekend was my grandparents 40th anniversary. To celebrate we had a sort of family reunion in Dana Point, California. My grandparents used to take my mom and my aunts and uncles to Doheny beach to go camping, so we stayed at the Double Tree Inn overlooking Doheny Beach, which incidentally is now the most polluted beach in California. My step dad and I flew in to Orange County Friday night. Out plane was over 2 hours delayed, so we got to chill in lovely McCarren Airport for more than 3 hours, our plane was supposed to depart at 4:55pm, we did not leave until roughly 7:30. Luckily I had an excellent book to read, so I didn't feel to put out. I find it strange how people in airports and airplanes bond with each other out of sheer boredom and shared inconvenience. My step dad and I had a short conversations about the delayed flight with a few strangers. I noticed people chatting on the plane about their different lives until they each went their separate ways, perhaps never to see each other again, but glad to have made a brief friendship to pass the time. It's sort of a beautiful thing to watch, strangers bonding.
Saturday brought about the festivities of anniversary celebration. It was good to see my family, especially my Auntie Cathy, cousin Amy and the rest of the Mollenhoff fam, who live in Texas. Amy is coming out here for her 21st birthday in September, I'm quite excited about that, we're party girls, my cousin and I. Good times were had and great food was consumed. Most of us then retired back to the hotel for a nice nap before regrouping on the hotel balcony for live music and more family fun. And boy did my family have fun! My mother and my Auntie Terri had a few too many glasses of wine, and while my mother was obviously trashed and having a good time, my aunt was just obnoxious! But all in all we had a good time, my brother played the guitar and sang two of his songs, my grandmother played the tambourine for a few songs, earning herself a free CD from the two-man band. And my family forced me to the stage to sing a song. Now I don't really know all of the words to any one song, at least any one song that this band would know, so I kind of just stood up there and looked like an ass, I did sing a little bit of the song, Stay, including the high "Oh won't you stay," part.
Sunday was beach day. Most of the family loaded up in the car and traipsed all around Laguna Beach and its surrounding shops, I was very impressed with myself for not buying anything. Amy fell asleep on the beach and was quite badly sunburned, she was somewhat rudely awaked when a large wave from the chilly sea came crashing over her. After a fun-filled day of sand and sun, we went to dinner at this little Mexican restaurant that was so yummy. And then, having decided to go home a day early with my brother and his girlfriend, rather than drive home the next morning with my stepdad and little bro, I set off home- back to the arms of my wonderful boyfriend.
I am very thankful for my family, they are strange, and fun, and sometimes a pain in the ass, but they are mine, and I love them.
